Larry D. Stratton
Attorney at Law
A high school career survey suggested that Larry Stratton’s aptitude was as a physician, but his interest was in the Social Sciences. After briefly pursuing a degree in Psychology, Larry graduated from California State University Long Beach in 1980 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science, and with a Minor in Economics.
At the urging of one of his Political Science professors, Larry applied for and was accepted into the four year part time program at the Whittier College School of Law, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and the American Association of Law Schools. For four years he worked full time while attending night school to pay for tuition; for two years at Pacific Bell as a service representative, and for the final two years at Surety Company of the Pacific as a legal assistant.
During this period, working full time and attending school on a part time basis, Larry applied for a position on the Whittier Law Review, as a member. After reading a sample law review article which Larry wrote, the Review granted him membership; Larry Stratton was a member of the Review from 1983 to 1984, regularly editing the work of authors submitting articles. He also wrote a casenote published by the Whittier Law Review in 1984.
Since earning his Juris Doctor degree from Whitter and and after passing the California Bar examination on the first attempt, Larry has worked for a variety of law firms in different legal fields. But in 1989 he joined the firm of Hausman & Sosa as the senior associate. In that position, he found his niche in appellate practice.
While many attorneys feel fortunate to be able to work on a single appeal during their entire career resulting in a single published opinion, since 1986 Larry has worked on dozens of appeals as appellate counsel for both private and public sector clients. This has resulted in twelve published opinions, not including a "ghostwritten" appellate brief which returned a favorable result before the Second District of the California Court of Appeal.
Some of the appellate cases Larry has worked on include Los Angeles County Office of the District Attorney v. Civil Service Commission (55 Cal.App.4th 187) and City of Chino v. Jackson (97 Cal.App.4th 377). Larry has briefed and argued cases before the California Court of Appeal and the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and he has also filed papers with the United States Supreme Court.
However, Larry Stratton’s first love is to assist young families and the elderly to overcome their legal obstacles and difficulties. Moreover, appellate work and civil litigation is often technical and exacting, giving Larry a unique perspective on estate planning practice, and the importance of protecting assets. He has also found that the oftentimes exacting practice of appellate and civil work has helped him weave practical solutions to the estate planning problems of his clients.
As a result, he has opened the Law Offices of Larry Stratton, specializing in estate planning practice. Also, Larry is not resting on his laurels: He recently became licensed as a California Registered Investment Advisor, opening the firm Stratton Financial and Estate Planning. Moreover, in November 2008, Larry earned the Life Agent license issued by the California Department of Insurance. He is also pursuing certification as a Certified Financial Planner, and is currently attending the certificate program at U.C.L.A.
Larry and his family live in the Southern California area, and his hobbies include reading, and making homemade jams. He is also licensed as an Amateur Radio Operator, holding a General license under the call I.D. of WB6RUN.
